Junior World Downhill Champion!

The World Downhill Championships took place in Leogang in Austria over the weekend of 9-11 October 2020. With the current COVID-19 pandemic there was a restriction on which riders could attend (none could be based in Ireland). The Cycling Ireland Off-road Commission was, however, able to authorise 4 representatives to compete.
Junior men: Chris Cummings, Oisin O’Callaghan
Junior women: McKenna Merten
Elite men: Jacob Dickson

The conditions in Leogang were very muddy on the 2.3 km course. A real challange for all riders.
After the practice day on Friday Chris was second fastest with Oisin 8th in the Junior men’s category. McKenna was 9th in the Junior women and Jacob was 32nd (out of a field of 87 riders) in the Elite men. The final took place on Sunday. McKenna retained 9th place, Jacob, unfortunately did not finish, Chris finished 21st but Oisin went on to win his category!! The first gold medal in downhill world championships for Ireland. A superb result.
