The Cycling Ireland Off-road Commission, in consulation with the host clubs, has made the decision to postpone the provincial cyclo-cross championships from Sunday 6 December 2020 to Sunday 3 January 2021.
Connacht: Hosted by: Westport Covey Wheelers – Venue: Westport
Leinster: Hosted by: Biking.ie – Venue: TBC
Munster : Hosted by: Greenmount CC – Venue: Limerick Race Course
Ulster : Hosted by: Island Wheelers – Venue: Windmill Park, Dungannon
The National Cyclo-cross championships are due to take place on 9/10 January 2020 at Palace Demense in Armagh hosted by Square Wheels (as of the date of this announcement).
The scheduled date for the provincials was felt to be too close to the lifting (hopefully) of restrictions and moving the date closer to the national championships would better prepare riders. Naturally, with the ongoing pandemic, these dates may have to be changed.
The Commission are pleased to welcome onboard Alan Redmond, currently with Biking Dirty, as the new Enduro Co-ordinator.
Alan grew up doing BMX, competing at Worlds in 1986. He competed in many national championships throughout the 80s. Al has been racing Enduro since 2014.
The Cycling Ireland Off-road Commission is delighted to announce our new Chair – Steve Donnellan. Steve has been a member of the Mountain Biking Association of Dublin (MAD) since 2008. He has previously served on their committee for five years, including three years in the role of Chair. Originally from Sydney, Australia, moving to Ireland in 2003, Steve has been involved with cycling since the early 1990s. He first got into road cycling, followed by cross-country racing and more recently into enduro. Through his involvement with MAD, Steve has had a long role in supporting XC racing and held the role of race director for MAD’s NPS XC round over the past few years.
Steve is looking forward to assisting the Commission in its continuing development across all off-road disciplines.

The World Downhill Championships took place in Leogang in Austria over the weekend of 9-11 October 2020. With the current COVID-19 pandemic there was a restriction on which riders could attend (none could be based in Ireland). The Cycling Ireland Off-road Commission was, however, able to authorise 4 representatives to compete.
Junior men: Chris Cummings, Oisin O’Callaghan
Junior women: McKenna Merten
Elite men: Jacob Dickson
The conditions in Leogang were very muddy on the 2.3 km course. A real challange for all riders.
After the practice day on Friday Chris was second fastest with Oisin 8th in the Junior men’s category. McKenna was 9th in the Junior women and Jacob was 32nd (out of a field of 87 riders) in the Elite men. The final took place on Sunday. McKenna retained 9th place, Jacob, unfortunately did not finish, Chris finished 21st but Oisin went on to win his category!! The first gold medal in downhill world championships for Ireland. A superb result.
The Cycling Ireland Off-road Commission will be holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday 25 October 2020.
The AGM will be held virtually. Time to be confirmed. Attendees will be asked to register in order to obtain a link to the event. This will be made available in due course.
All roles on the commission are up for renewal.
